Snuffle Scatter: Turn the Garden Into a Treasure Hunt
Sniffing is naturally calming and tiring for dogs. Scattering food in grass gives them a job to do and a safe outlet for foraging instincts.
You need
- A handful of your dog's usual kibble or small treats
- A patch of grass (garden or quiet park)
- A long line if you're not in an enclosed space
How to play
- Let your dog see you toss a few treats into the grass so they get the idea.
- Scatter a handful over a few square metres, some in the open and some tucked near longer grass.
- Say a cue like 'find it' and let them wander and sniff at their own pace.
- Stay relaxed and let them lead; there's no rush with this game.
- Once they've hoovered up the lot, you can scatter a second round further afield.
Make it harder
- Scatter across a bigger area so they have to search further
- Mix in different-smelling treats so some are easier to find than others
- Try it in slightly longer grass or on a gentle slope for more of a challenge
Safety
Only play on grass you know hasn't been treated with chemicals, and check for stones, sharp twigs or litter first. Keep dogs with food guarding around other animals away from shared scatter sessions, and supervise around any wildlife droppings they might be tempted to eat instead.
